Texas Art Residency

The Texas Art Residency offers emerging visual artists a transformative opportunity to immerse themselves in their creative practice in a supportive and inspiring environment. Hosted by the Center for Contemporary Arts in downtown Abilene, this residency is open to artists working in painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, fiber, and new media.

The Texas Art Residency is designed for artists who are ready to push the boundaries of their practice while engaging with the rich cultural heritage of Abilene. During their time here, residents will be encouraged to experiment with new ideas and materials, drawing inspiration from the local landscape, history, and community.

Program Requirements

  1. Since part of Center for Contemporary Arts’ mission is to support the local artistic culture, artists are highly encouraged to engage with the regional arts community when in residence. We look at this as a form of giving something back to the artistic culture in our region. The context and form of this engagement are very flexible and can be worked out with our staff after acceptance of the residency. We would love to discuss your ideas including programs such as a private workshop or studio visit, or public presentation or performance. The Center for Contemporary Arts welcomes proposals from the artist prior to and/or during their residency for this public engagement opportunity. Our staff will work in close collaboration with residents to coordinate all aspects of the engagement.

  2. Artists should be willing to share their work, processes, and experience with audiences through the Center’s website, social channels, and printed publications. During their time here, residents will be encouraged to experiment with new ideas and materials, drawing inspiration from the local landscape, history, and community.

  3. In collaboration with the Executive Director, artists are asked to donate one work to the Residency collection. This piece will be added to the Guesthouse for future residents to experience while in residence.

On the application, applicants will be asked to:

  • Provide a proposal for a project they wish to complete during the residency period

  • Note: Collaborators should apply together, designating one as the primary applicant and naming the other as the collaborator. If you choose to apply as a team you will share all stipends and the living space.

  • Upload 10-15 JPEG images of their work, up to 5MB each.

  • Supply 2 artistic/professional references

  • Provide an artist statement explaining your art practice

  • Pay a $10 non-refundable application fee through SlideRoom. 100% of this fee goes towards the cost of administering the open call.

We receive applications via the SlideRoom portal which has detailed application instructions. Applicants will receive a confirmation email once their application has been submitted and received.

Contact: If you have any technical issues with the SlideRoom platform, please contact SlideRoom. With any additional questions, please contact us at residency@center-arts.com.

Applications are reviewed by a jury consisting of CCA staff, Board members, artist members, and regional arts professionals and supporters.

Finalists will be contacted for a virtual interview by September 10th and should be available for an interview on September 11th or 12th.

Final decisions will be announced by end of day September 12.

All applicants not selected for Fall 2025 are invited to resubmit for the 2026 cycles.
