Leaves: the Lungs of Life

by Kathie Walker-Millar, Larry Millar, and Rebecca Boatman

This art exhibition celebrates the remarkable beauty and essential role of leaves. Featured are Abilene artists Larry Millar and Kathie Walker-Millar, alongside Dallas artist Rebecca Boatman. A couple of years ago, we discovered Rebecca’s captivating clay leaves—each with faces peering through their delicate openings—and immediately knew she would be an essential voice in this leaf-inspired show. In this exhibition, Rebecca and Kathie present sculptural and functional works in clay, while Larry contributes a collection of watercolor and photographic studies of leaves he gathered over more than two years.

Leaves are among the most vital and poetic forces of life on Earth. Acting as the planet’s lungs, they draw in carbon dioxide, harness sunlight, and release the oxygen that sustains us all. They are nature’s engines—purifying the air, sheltering diverse species beneath forest canopies, and regulating temperature through shade. Even in their fall, leaves continue to nurture life, enriching soil and feeding the smallest organisms.

This exhibition unites art and science in celebration of the humble leaf—an elegant reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things and the quiet brilliance of nature’s design.
