Christi Kuppin
Artist Biography:
Christi Kuppin is a ceramic artist based in Buffalo Gap, Texas. She began her clay journey many years ago at the Dyess Air Force Base Arts Center, where she and her mother would go on Saturdays, to make low-fire poured ceramics.
Poured ceramics and childhood drawings developed into more creative expressions when she discovered textiles, jewelry making and wheel-thrown ceramics at her first Art class as a high school senior. She began making rings to purchase lapidary equipment to cut the stones for her jewelry. The Abilene Reporter News featured her and her squash blossom necklace, with the Turquoise stones she cut, as well as smithing all the silver blossoms and casting the Naja pendant.
Christi continued making jewelry in college, where she developed a love for wheel-thrown ceramics. Beginning college at McMurry and transferring to Hardin Simmons University, she completed her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree, with a concentration in 3-D/Ceramics.
From her earliest pieces to current pieces, she has been obsessed with texture, creating textures from carving or pressing objects into clay, such as lace, and handmade doilies her mom crocheted. Christi’s love of nature is present in her work, using Sgraffito, Mishima, and carving techniques in some of her latest pieces. In the 2025 CCAN, she won 1st in Functional Ceramics and 2nd in Sculpture, and previously 1st in Functional Ceramics in the 2022 CCAN. She is a Signature Artist Member at The Center for Contemporary Arts, where her ceramic work is available for purchase.
