2022 INTERCOLLEGIATE STUDENT ART COMPETITION

The Center for Contemporary Arts is proud to present the thirteenth annual juried Intercollegiate Student Art Competition for regional college and university students!

 

DEADLINES:     

Online submissions are due by midnight, Friday, January 21st
Artwork delivered no later than 5 PM, Tuesday, January 25th

ELIGIBILITY                                                      

The competition is open to students at regional colleges and universities Entries may be submitted in any medium if the finished piece meets the size and weight restrictions of the category.

Successful entries will be those that represent contemporary fine art in subject matter, media, artistic expression, and professionalism of presentation in one of the following categories:

  • 2-Dimensional (non-digital media)

  • 2-Dimensional (digitally created)

  • 3-Dimensional

  • Photography

Graphic design (including commercial design, poster design, etc.) is allowed for this competition. All work must be original and must not have been exhibited at The Center for Contemporary Arts previously. It must be framed, matted, wired, or otherwise professionally presented and ready for display. Each student may submit up to two entries. EXHIBITION

Entries will be juried by professional, contemporary artists. Work accepted by the jury for the exhibition will be displayed in Gallery 3 at The Center for Contemporary Arts from January 28 through February 26, 2022. All work selected for the exhibit must remain on display through the end of the show.

AWARDS

Awards will be given for Best in Show and Best in Category, as well as for 2nd and 3rd Place and Honorable Mentions in each category. 

CASH PRIZES

In addition to the following cash prizes, these five winners will be awarded a 1-year Student Artist Membership at the Center for Contemporary Arts (must complete Artist Member Registration to activate membership). 

  • Best in Show:  $300

  • First Place 2-D (non-digital media):  $100

  • First Place 2-D (digital media):  $100

  • First Place Photography:  $100

  • First Place 3-D:  $100

Please thoroughly read the IMPORTANT DATES and COMPETITION RULES on this page and then do the following:

 

  • Complete the ENTRY FORM (once for each submission) by the posted deadline.

  • Deliver your artwork to The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress Street, by the posted deadline.

COMPETITION RULES

  • Entries are limited to two per person. If more than two entries are submitted, only two of the submissions will be allowed.

  • Participating students must complete an online entry form for each piece being submitted. Required information includes artist name, email address, phone number, artwork title, medium used, and school in which they are enrolled. No artwork will be accepted for which this form has not been submitted.

  • All artworks must be delivered or mailed to the Center for Contemporary Arts: 220 Cypress Street in downtown Abilene, during the dates and times indicated above. Artist is responsible for the return shipment.

  • Late entries will NOT be accepted, even if the entry form was submitted on time. Please contact the Center as soon as possible if you will be unable to meet this deadline.

  • Artwork must meet the following restrictions for each category:

    • 2-Dimensional Art: Finished (framed) work must be no wider than 48" and no taller than 60". Art must not exceed 30 pounds. Art must be completely dry. Mixed media and paintings done on canvas may be exhibited without frames but must have finished edges (i.e., side edges of canvases must be painted.) Any material mounted on the art must be securely fastened.

    • 3-Dimensional Art: Submissions must be stable (i.e., must not rock, tip, and not be top-heavy,) structurally sound, and must not require assembly or installation on-site by the artist in order to be displayed. Works are limited to 50 pounds in weight, 72” in height, and 36” in width including the base.

    • Photography and Digital/Graphic Art: Submissions must be framed unless the art is a canvas-wrapped print. Art can be mounted on foam core or other presentation board without a frame, but proper hanging equipment must accompany the art (i.e, 3M strips, Velcro, etc). Photographs and digital art prints must be matted, and prints must be 8” x 10” or larger. Framed pieces must be no wider than 48" and no taller than 60" or exceed 30 pounds in weight.

  • All artworks must be presentation-ready. All work must be completely dry. No artwork will be accepted that requires wiring, framing, repairing, or other adjustments by Center staff. 

  • Artwork to be displayed on the wall must be wired for hanging using D-rings or proper wiring. Distance between top of the frame and center of the wire when hanging must be at least 2”. No saw-tooth hangers or single D-rings are permitted. Specialty display methods should be cleared with the Curator in advance to avoid disqualification of the entry.

  • Hardware used for hanging must be sturdy enough to support the artwork. The Center is not responsible for any damage incurred to art that does not contain proper hanging equipment.

  • No warped pieces will be accepted.

  • No plagiarism will be tolerated, including direct copying or usurping of images created by another artist without the artist’s express, written permission.

  • Selection of artwork for exhibit and the awarding of prizes will be at the discretion of the jury and the Curator, and their decisions will be final.

  • Appeals for exceptions to the size and weight limits or any other restrictions expressed in these rules will be at the sole discretion of the Curator.

  • Artists whose work is not selected for exhibit will be notified and are expected to pick up their art no later than the date stipulated above. 

  • Artists whose work is exhibited are responsible for picking up their art by the date stipulated above. 

  • The Center for Contemporary Arts is not responsible for artwork left beyond the designated deadlines.

  • Work left more than 30 days after the posted deadlines becomes the property of the Center for Contemporary Arts to dispose of as it chooses.
