ArtReach,
the Center's arts education and outreach program, has evolved to serve a social
agencies' audience previously not addressed by any other art organization. Historically,
our ArtReach programs have been directed at underserved youth audiences, and over
time, these obvious audiences began to receive services from other institutions.
The Center for Contemporary Arts stepped
out of its comfort zone to respond to requests from social agencies serving older,
and somewhat "confined" audiences. We now provide artist member instructors
who have developed programs to serve Taylor County jail inmates, Juvenile Justice
detainees, residents and employees of Disabilities Resources, and clients of Adaptive
Recreation. The Center plays a vital role in exposing These
members of our community to experiences engaging curiosity and wonder, imagination
and technical skills, and create a "safe" environment in which to explore
and discover. We currently showcase the work of
our ArtReach students at Abilene City Hall, and invite anyone interested to visit
City Hall and enjoy the art. ArtReach has also
implemented a "movie night" program designed to introduce University
students to Abilene's professional art community to enjoy fellowship, watch and
discuss art films in our photo gallery once a month. Art films are selected to
supplement curriculum at our universities, and discussions are moderated by artists
and university instructors. Participation in our
wide range of educational opportunities provides community members a fuller understanding
of each other and the place in which we live. |
