EXHIBITS, GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS

The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress Street

Stop by the Center and get a preview of the Armadillo’s that will be making their journey to Austin July 13th. The Center for Contemporary Arts is celebrating our 20th Anniversary this year. The Center’s Summer Fundraiser will be held at Perini Ranch Steakhouse August 22nd. The event theme is “I Wanna Go Home to the Armadillo”. Local artists are busy designing armadillos which will be touring Austin, Buffalo Gap and Abilene during their road-trip beginning July 13th in Austin and ending the 27th in Abilene.
If you can not make it to Austin to view these little guys don’t worry they will be making a pit stop at Buffalo Gap Historic Village in August. Make sure to find the armadillo that you can take home! A silent auction will be held during the event on Saturday, August 22nd. Each individual armadillo will be on auction during the fundraiser.

Jane Adams Breed Gallery: La Flore La Faune: Jennifer Nichols & Linda Stricklin
La Flore la Faune is a joint exhibit by Signature Center Artist Members Jennifer Nichols and Linda Stricklin. Both of these artists are inspired by the natural environment and are presenting works representative of that influence. Vibrant colors and textures fill the Jane Adams Breed Gallery transformed by the unique integration of fine art and natural materials. Join us in this celebration and appreciation of the environment. This exhibit will be on display through August 29.

Gallery 2 (Photography): Reclaiming the Beauty of the Battlefields: Ann McDonald

The Center is proud to present works by Lubbock photographer Ann McDonald. From 1999 – 2006, McDonald took time to travel to historic battlefields in the Pacific. She traced the footsteps of her relatives and friends who fought in World War II and along the way created an exhibition of photographs depicting these battlefields in their present beauty and wonder. Ann says, “Each photograph in this exhibit tells a small part of the history of World War II in the Pacific as the sites are found today. The images are very personal and evoke emotions of gratitude, sadness, whimsy, heart-breaking beauty, soul-stirring loyalty, and exhilaration of victory over evil”. This exhibit will be on display through July 30th and an exhibit reception will be held July 17th at 6:30 p.m.

Gallery 3: The Person Above the Mantel: artist member group exhibit

Every family has a notorious portrait passed down through generations and members of the family probably all wonder the same thing: “who is that!?”
The Artist Membership of the Center for Contemporary Arts is proud to present this exhibit with a spin on that thought. From detailed, realistic portraiture, to abstract, non-objective representations, this exhibit features over 30 works of art by the Center Artist Members and their vision of The Person Above the Mantel. A reception for this exhibit will be hosted July 17th at 6:30 p.m.

Gallery 4: Annual Exhibit- Dirty Drawers

More than 30 years of weekly meetings, the Dirty Drawers are still at it—producing vibrant, detailed images of those who model for them. The group meets every Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. to create figure drawings and portraits and to practice their craft. A reception for this exhibit will be held on July 17th at 6:30pm.

The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress Street

The Grace Museum
Family Make & Take Activity in the Education Center: Come and create a project that brings out your USA pride! Make & Take is a free, hands-on art activity for all ages. Sponsored by Senter, Realtors.

Main Gallery—James Surls: From the Heartland | This landmark exhibition by internationally acclaimed sculptor and Texas native James Surls features 21 contemporary sculptures and 12 large-scale drawings, created by the artist between 2005 and 2008. The Grace Museum has also published a large hardcover book in tandem with the exhibition, entitled James Surls: From the Heartland, featuring rich photos of the artist’s work, as well as essays from three of the nation’s foremost authorities on contemporary art. Books are available to purchase at The Grace Museum.

Gallery A—Helen Altman: Spotted Deer | Helen Altman selects commonplace materials such as packing blankets, wire, and paper and transforms them into arresting images by employing unexpected and demanding techniques and tools. Each domesticated and wild animal depicted appears alone and separated from their natural habitat. By focusing her imagery on the delicate balance of nature, the artist invites us to consider reality and our understanding of what is natural, and how we experience nature in contemporary culture.

Galleries B & C—Time Mediated Anomalies: High Desert Paintings of James Woodson | From a distance, Fort Worth artist Jim Woodson’s paintings appear to be familiar landscapes. But upon careful inspection, the large-scale, richly colored canvases reveal subtle distortions and ethereal references. The oil paintings are inspired by sweeping southwestern panoramas of Texas and New Mexico. Actively reinterpreting rather than merely depicting what he sees, the artist’s process involves photographing and then recombining elements from different perspectives to create a more personalized version of the scene.
