City Lights ArtWalk - December 11 , 2008

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT
At the Center for Contemporary Arts, enjoy performances by the Aldersgate Handbell and Vocal Choirs and the Improv Team from the Abilene High School Theatre Department throughout the evening.
There will be a reception in the Center's Conference Room honoring Isaac and Mary Palaparthi, the Indian directors of Sanctuary Home For Children. Come meet the Palaparthis, see photos of the children of Sanctuary Home, sample Indian snacks, and enjoy henna hand painting ($10 per person.) Art prints and notecards featuring the children's artwork will also be for sale.
Visit the large west gallery and galleries one and two at Roberts Studio to see photography by Samantha Chevrie, Larry E. Fink and work by Photography Students from Hardin-Simmons University. Magician Lonnie Chevrie will also perform during the evening.
The Wylie High School Jazz Ensemble will play Christmas selections from 5:30 - 6:30 PM at the ACU*Cockerell Gallery.
At the Grace Museum, create your own spiral beaded light catchers in Make It and Take It, a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all ages. Make It and Take It is available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. While you're there, enjoy the seasonal sounds of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest Handbell Choir, and have a visit with Santa!
At Texas Star Trading Company, Abilene author Glenn Dromgoole will sign books from 5:30-7:30 PM.
At the Abilene Public Library, the Big Country Porcelain Art Guild will display their fine artwork. Pam Early and Vicki Kihlberg will demonstrate painting on china. The BCPAG is one of the oldest clubs in Abilene and has a particular mission for teaching, so members are happy to show anyone how to do it!
Stop into Monks Coffee Shop to see artwork by Allison Condry and Rebecca Heard and pottery by Austin and Elizabeth Brown and at Cypress Street Station, enjoy art by Ginger Test while you dine.
A display of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt panels will be displayed in the foyer of the Civic Center. The panels will be hung from the upper west walkway and can be viewed from the foyer floor.
The Pigeon wants to invite you to come down to the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature. You and your parents can come and draw on the Pigeon Wall and you can do an art project from the book I love my toy! If you haven't seen our latest Exhibition by Mo Willems this will be a great night to come in. Also be sure to visit our bookstore and do some Holiday shopping!
In front of the Cockerell Galleries & Studios: Stop by and see Santa as he roams around checking on kids. Enjoy Vladimir Karadegov as he serenades guests with his beautiful Christmas music! Make sure to book your henna party for Christmas, or buy a gift certificate for a loved one from henna tattoo artist, Diana Burk! In time for Christmas, jewelry maker Carrie Blaschke will be selling her beautiful, individually handcrafted bling! Decorator Jaime Ray, of a "Change of Scenery" will be selling her own designer creations of jewelry, shoes, and more! Order custom designs of calligraphy creations by professionals Suzanne Starr and Anita Lane! Get glammed up with face painting by Janine Smith! Stop by and see her batik creations - great Christmas gifts! After you're through shopping, stop for a five minute chair massage for $5 by masseuse Melanie Blalock! ACUart students will be in front of the ACU*Cockerell Art Gallery selling their prints as Christmas presents.

Jane Adams Breed Gallery: Gauguin's Tahiti a Center Artist Member Group Exhibit
Experience the latest collaborative work of the Center's Artist Membership, inspired by the artwork Paul Gauguin created during his stint in Tahiti.
Gallery 2: TPS 17: The National Competition by the Texas Photographic Society - This exhibition features selections from the Texas Photographic Society's National Competition. A selection of 43 images selected from 52 artists will be on display through January.
Gallery 3: Intercollegiate Student Art Competition - The Center is proud to host its Inaugural Intercollegiate Student Art Competition. This juried competition was open to all area University students.
Gallery 4: Selections from the 24fps International Short Film Festival from the Historic Paramount Theatre. A selection of films from the annual festival will be screened in Gallery 4 during November and December. The Center will also screen films from the Young Filmmakers Showcase.

The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress St.
Main Gallery: Apron Chronicles: A Patchwork of American Recollections. Share a few apron memories while viewing this wonderful exhibit. Apron Chronicles is a nationwide traveling exhibit comprised of photographs, stories and vintage aprons. The exhibit acts as a vehicle, providing prompts that will have visitors recalling and sharing their own apron recollections.
Second Floor: Galleries A, B & C: The Art Guys: Failed Schemes and Pipe Dreams.
If contemporary art is about ideas ... then what if? No idea is too outlandish, wacky or impossible for the Houston artist team of Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing, who work collaboratively under the name The Art Guys. The exhibition features selections from 25 years of the team's drawings, proposals, failed schemes and pipe dreams. The Art Guys: Failed Schemes & Pipe Dreams features proposals for works of art that did, did not and often just could not come to fruition and includes drawings, maquettes, ephemera and documentation. The exhibition will also include studies from Travel Light, 2004, the public art project made of 360 cast translucent suitcases illuminated with computer controlled L.E.D. lights that is permanently installed in the international baggage claim area of Terminal E at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Come Play and Learn in The Grace's Children's Museum, featuring many new exhibits that are certain to educate and entertain!
Third Floor: History Museum - Mallouf Boot Shop and Historic Period Rooms

12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, 1289 N. 2nd St.
Living History Interpreters Tom Walke, Alex Phillips, and William Lenches will be dressed in 12th Armored Division WWII uniforms and will give fifteen minute firearms presentations. There are small gifts available for children in the gift shop, donated by Vanessa Harris.

NCCIL (National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature), 102 Cedar St.
Knuffle Funny: The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems
The NCCIL will feature new artist, Mo Willems and his book, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late. Everyone is invited to see the exhibition and to enjoy making a craft with the family.

ACU*Cockerell Gallery & Cockerell Studios, 1133 N. 2nd St.
ACU*Cockerell Gallery: The Big Country Art Association will be exhibiting the winners of the BCAA 2008 art competition during a reception beginning at 5:30 PM.
First-Ever "Thriving Artists' Sale" in time for Christmas at the Cockerell Galleries & Studios Upstairs! Beautiful works of art will be on sale by some of our artists that will satisfy any art lover's taste! Part of the proceeds from this sale will also go to support "Our House," as we support one of our own at Cockerell Galleries, Nancy Capra! Great Christmas ideas abound as our Featured artist, photographer Samantha Manski, exhibits her show, Second Glances. We are also pleased to announce our "Guest" artists, Mother and Daughter artists, Martha Kiel and Mary K. Huff! Twig & Willow's Nancy & Hannah Capra and Carey Thompson invite guests to come into Studio 213 to see their watercolors, oils, and photography they have ready for Christmas shopping! Ralph & DeeDee Zamarippa, of Studio Two-One-Two have the largest collection of artfully designed and decorated disc golfs any sports enthusiast would enjoy! Brittany Bennett and Stacy Horton of Studio Brista's #210, invite all to be inspired by their dramatic and heartfelt pieces! Ash Almonte's newest style of floating art can be seen in her Studio 208. T.M. Gand of Studio 207 will enthrall all with her bright and vividly colored paintings; Kay Cockerell and Patty Bowdoin of the Studio 206's Last Studio Left!! warmly welcome Christmas shoppers! Jessica Natalee Templeton, of Studio 205, will be exhibiting her colorful and glittery paintings for all to enjoy!
