ARTWALK ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT
Take your family to the NCCIL to make
ogre and donkey ears to wear as you enjoy the William Steig:
The Man Who Never Grew Up exhibit. Steig is the creator of
the now famous Shrek. Meet Brave Irene, Amos and Boris, and find
out what is making Spinky sulk.
At the Grace Museum, make a Family Tree
to celebrate Family History Month in Make It and Take It. Make
It and Take It is a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all
ages. It will be available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.
Capture your family legacy! Joy Wiley at the
Abilene Public Library can help you get started. Pedigree
charts and basic instructions will be available so that you can
chart your family tree.
The Historic Paramount Theatre presents
Pan's Labyrinth at 7:30 PM. One of the most critically
acclaimed films of 2006, this stunning work from director Guillmero
Del Toro appeared on over 100 "Top Ten Film" lists at
year's end. It is the Winner of multiple Academy Awards, as well
as the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival and the National
Society of Film Critics' Award for Best Film. In Spanish with
English subtitles. Rated R. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and
$5 for students, seniors, military and children.
The Center for Contemporary Arts will
be holding a reception for the exhibit Snapshot! at 6:00
PM. This Gallery 4 exhibit features photography by area ninth
grade students. The Center partnered with the Abilene Reporter-News
to hold the workshop from which this work was produced. In Gallery
3, Chapman Stick player Brian Baggett will be performing upstairs.
Indie Rock band Wouk will be playing in front
of the Cockerell Building's 2nd St. Gallery & Studios.
Also nearby, Pinhole Photographer, Henry Morgan, will be displaying
his art photography.
Bernice Landrum invites you to visit
the second floor gallery at the Windsor, located at the corner
of N. 4th and Pine Street.
The Abilene Nutrition Meetup will be
hosting "Eating Healthy on a Budget" in the Windsor

GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress
St.
Jane Adams Breed Gallery: Images of the Southwest: Past and
Present by Signature Artist Member Barry Arthur. Barry Arthur's
oil painting and sculpture is filled with scenes that are as vivid
and realistic as the Great Southwest from which they are drawn.
Gallery 2: No Crystal Stair by Angie
Cook. This collection of photographs by Angie Cook documents the
lives of six individuals and gives viewers insight into the personal
struggles they have overcome.
Gallery 3: Textures by Katy Presswood.
The work in this exhibit draws influence from dirt, rocks, clay,
plants, sticks, twigs and bones. The work is mostly non-objective,
dominated by color
and texture.
Gallery 4: Snapshot! Photography by
area youth. This exhibit features the work of area ninth grade
students who participated in a photography and writing workshop
hosted by the Center & the Abilene Reporter-News.
Cockerell's 2nd Street Gallery and Studios,
1133 N. 2nd St.
Don't miss your last chance to see The Big Country Art Association's
show. It will close after October's Artwalk. Visit the upstairs
studios to enjoy works of art by artists Ash Almonte, Josh Burrow,
Robert Cavaliere, Chris Cockerell, T.M. Gand, Doug Hodel, Samantha
Manski, Henry Morgan, Nancy & Hannah Capra, Jim Smith, Jessica
Natalee Templeton, Heather Turner, and Bob Weston. Clinical Hynpotherast,
Christy Kahl invites everyone to stop in to see her studio as
well.
Frontier Texas!, 625 N. 1st St.
Frontier Texas! will have a free exhibit entitled
Sacred Symbols, Sacred Places: Texas Indian Art & Historic
Sites in the Frontier Gallery through November 19th. Frontier
Texas! will be open from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Get $1.00 off Century
of Adventure exhibit admissions all day when you ask for the ArtWalk
Discount.
The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress St.
Main Gallery: Bound for Glory: America in Color, 1939-1943.
This is the first major exhibition of the little-known color images
taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office
of War Information.
Second Floor: Gallery A and B - Earth + Sky: Hellerbrand and
Masteller. In Earth + Sky, photographer Nancy Hellerbrand
and painter Barry Masteller capture the wonder and majesty of
our fragile environment as the primary subject.
Gallery C - Art For the People: Depression Era Prints From the
Collection. Includes a selection of significant prints from the
1930s curated from The Grace's collection. A selection of these
prints, along with others from the collection, will be on display
in conjunction with the main gallery exhibition Bound for Glory.
Second Floor: Children's Museum - Come Play and Learn in The Grace's
newly renovated Children's Museum, featuring many new exhibits
that are certain to educate and entertain!
Third Floor: History Museum - Mallouf Boot Shop and Historic
Period Rooms.
12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, 1289 N. 2nd St.
Come learn about one of World War II's most feared military forces
in the European front. Patton chose the "Hellcats" to
lead his rush to the Rhine to capture bridges so that Allied forces
could cross into Germany. The 12th Division set a record for movement
through enemy territory that stood for over 50 years. Open 5:30
- 8:00 PM. Admission is free for ArtWalk. There are free toys
for children who visit the museum, compliments of Vanessa Harris.
NCCIL (National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature),
102 Cedar St.
The original Shrek has come to Abilene in all his ogre-ugly, but
lovable, glory. The artwork of classic children's book author,
illustrator, and creator of Shrek, William Steig, is featured
at the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature through
October 19th. The exhibit includes 50 original watercolor illustrations
from the Steig family's private collection.
Abilene Public Library, 202 Cedar St.
Some of Nature's best artwork will be on display
at your library, thanks to the Abilene Geological Society. Society
members will be on hand to help people appreciate the wonder and
variety of these creations. As you stroll downtown Abilene during
ArtWalk, you'll also want to stop in and see Debra Warr's fabulous
mural devoted to all the wonders that spring from the imagination
and the pages of children's literature. Free.

PM during ArtWalk.

bar with hot and iced espresso beverages, including Italian sodas,

Shop until 8:00 PM. Loring Laven will display his unique Laminated
Paper Mache Figures, and you can shop for fashion jewelry, special
gifts, antiques, collectibles, western decor, shabby chic and
hand-crafted furniture.

St. will be open until 8:00 PM for late shopping. Be sure

the fun into the night with live music & drink specials. Open

Monks Coffee Shop, 233 Cypress St. Step inside Monks for
a freshly brewed cup of coffee and enjoy art by local artist Brittany
Koonce. Live music begins at 7:00 PM. Hours are extended until
midnight every Thursday through Saturday.

Kerry Hardwick with Mary Kay will be
in front of the Center for Contemporary Arts. With the Holiday
Season fast approaching, now is the time to start planning your
