ChalkWalk - September
11, 2008 ACTIVITIES
AND ENTERTAINMENT ArtWalk
is everything it's chalked up to be this month! Chalk will be available at the
Center for Contemporary Arts, where you can express your inner graffiti
artist on the sidewalk, or gather up a group to create a sidewalk masterpiece
in Everman Park.
At
the Center for Contemporary Arts, hear pianist Ric Richardson tickle
the ivories, beginning at 5:30 PM, and see exhibits by Ford Farr, Mike
Lanier, and other Center Artist Members.
In
Everman Park, see a demonstration by a group from Hong's Martial Arts
World at 6:00 PM.
Abilene
Independent Schools, United Way, and Region 14 Education Service Center will
present a Family Resource Fair in the One AISD Center located at 241 Pine
from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. The Family Resource Fair is a collaborative effort to provide
a caring outreach to the community which focuses on area resources and services.
This is a one stop opportunity for parents, students and Abilenians to learn about
and take advantage of the quality community resources available to Abilene residents.
It is our goal, that through a family's ability to access services, they may increase
quality of life and ultimately impact students' educational performance.
Join
the Abilene Public Library in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and the
cultural celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The display will
feature items used for a celebration, and an explanation of each article including
flowers, candles, salt, ashes, bread, water, incense, fruit, favorite items belonging
to the person being honored and pictures. Carmen Lathem will be here from 6:00
- 7:30 PM to answer questions about this celebration.
At
Texas Star Trading Co., see A Little Piece of Texas, a display and
sale of small, original framed paintings by Charlie Hukill.
Melissa
Ragan, of MR Art, will be at the Honeycomb Tree at 7:00 PM presenting
new paintings and wood sculptures. As always, the Honeycomb Tree will be open
for shopping until 8:00 PM.
At
the Grace Museum, create your own chalk pastel masterpiece to celebrate
ChalkWalk in Make It and Take It, a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all
ages available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.
Cockerell
Galleries welcomes everyone to shop our sidewalk artists' booths! Mixed-media
artist, H. Turner of FILOS' UpStairs Studio 212 will sell unique, handmade ceramic
jewelry. Henna Artist, Diana Burk will offer a variety of designs for temporary
henna "tats." Professional Calligraphers, Suzanne Starr and Anita Lane
will paint name signs, and Batik artist, Janine Smith, will sell her uniquely-designed
batik backpacks, beach bags, and more!
Stop
into Monks Coffee Shop to see art by Bonnie Buchanan and pottery
by Austin and Liz Brown.
At
Cypress Street Station, enjoy artwork by Barbara Edwards while you
dine.
GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
The
Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress St. Jane
Adams Breed Gallery: Symbolic Renditions by Ford Farr Ford Farr's expressive
painting style depicts unusual subjects and incorporates satirical allusions to
well-known artworks.
Gallery 2: Green a Center Artist
Member Group Exhibit - This photography exhibit by Center Artist members explores
the different interpretations of the word "Green." Our environment is
in a fragile state and this new, innovative term seems to be the all-encompassing
path to turning things around. Gallery 3: Go Figure-ative
a Center Artist Member Group Exhibit - The figure is one of the most complicated
subjects to capture. Whether it's a hand or a full body in movement, an artist's
interpretation of the figure can often be a direct insight into an artist's ability
and skill. This exhibit, Go Figure-ative, allows our artists to present their
various talents in expression and encompasses their wit and creativity. Gallery
4: Nature, Up Close and Personal by Mike Lanier - Lanier's life-like paintings
give us a magnified look at animals in nature. Each of these paintings is a close
study of the wonderful occurrences in nature The Grace
Museum, 102 Cypress St. Main Gallery: Closed in
preparation for Fall Benefit Second Floor: Gallery A - Sandria Hu: Smoke and
Ash. Sandria Hu's abstract prints, paintings and constructions are both physically
and emotionally compelling. Her personalized style and technique has developed
over many years of artistic work and worldwide travel. Her work has been called
landscapes of the mind - fragments of memory of places visited and revisited again
and again. Galleries B and C - Imaging Blackness, 1915-2002: Film Posters from
the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive. Imaging Blackness includes 43
striking posters from almost a century of independent black cinema. Collectively,
these film posters provide a captivating exploration of the development of African-American
cinema as it forged a role for black entertainers that countered - or reinforced
- prevailing racial stereotypes. Come Play and Learn in The Grace's Children's
Museum, featuring many new exhibits that are certain to educate and entertain! Third

NCCIL
(National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature), 102 Cedar St. The
Global Artistry of Leo & Diane Dillon: A Retrospective - Revered for their
talent and versatility, husband and wife duo Leo and Diane Dillon have collaborated
on over 40 books, and have received two Caldecott awards. During ArtWalk, the
NCCIL will feature the book The Girl Who Spun Gold, and help you create your very
own chalk patterns, reflecting the Dillon's illustrations. Frontier
Texas!, 625 N. 1st St. Frontier Texas! will be open from 9:00 AM - 6:00

Gallery: Sandra Bowden: Icons & Logos - This 40 year retrospective of
Bowden's work will open with a public reception beginning at 5:30 PM. Admission
is always free. Cockerell Galleries & Studios UpStairs proudly presents
the emotional, artful photography of our featured artist, Tammy Marcelain of Marcelain
Photography, in Studio 203! We welcome guest artist, Abigail Wellborn with her
show, Beauty: In the Eye of Ordinary. Jaime Ray, of a Change of Scenery will host
the grand opening of Studio 214! Nancy and Hannah Capra and Carey Thompson of
Studio 213 will display their awe-inspiring, mixed-media work! H. Turner, of FILOS'S
Studio 212, will exhibit her colorful pottery, photography and jewelry! Visit
Joanna Fortson of The Wild Paintbrush. Stacy Horton and Brittany Bennett of Studio
Brista 210, invite all to enjoy their expressive art! Don't miss the painted studio
of Ash Almonte, Studio 208! T.M. Gand, of Studio 207, enjoys visiting with guests
as they enjoy her brightly colored works of art! Also in 207, photographer Samantha
Manski delights all with personal perspectives of the world around her! Painters
Kay Cockerell & Patty Bowdoin of The Last Studio Left!, Studio 206, are going
green! Jessica Natalee Templeton, of Studio 205, delights in creating decorative,
joyful, colorful paintings. Lone Star Hypnosis's C. Kahl, in Studio 215, is now
offering fresh herbs and handmade jewelry, as well as her special hypnosis packages!
12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, 1289 N.
2nd St. Living History Interpreters Tom Walke, Alex Phillips, and William Lenches
will be dressed in 12th Armored Division WWII uniforms and will give 15 minute
firearms presentations. There are small gifts available for children in the gift
shop, donated by Vanessa Harris. SPECIALTY SHOPS Cassandra's
and Company, 173 Pine St. Open until 7:00 PM during ArtWalk.
