ChalkWalk - September 11, 2008

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT

ArtWalk is everything it's chalked up to be this month! Chalk will be available at the Center for Contemporary Arts, where you can express your inner graffiti artist on the sidewalk, or gather up a group to create a sidewalk masterpiece in Everman Park.

At the Center for Contemporary Arts, hear pianist Ric Richardson tickle the ivories, beginning at 5:30 PM, and see exhibits by Ford Farr, Mike Lanier, and other Center Artist Members.

In Everman Park, see a demonstration by a group from Hong's Martial Arts World at 6:00 PM.

Abilene Independent Schools, United Way, and Region 14 Education Service Center will present a Family Resource Fair in the One AISD Center located at 241 Pine from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. The Family Resource Fair is a collaborative effort to provide a caring outreach to the community which focuses on area resources and services. This is a one stop opportunity for parents, students and Abilenians to learn about and take advantage of the quality community resources available to Abilene residents. It is our goal, that through a family's ability to access services, they may increase quality of life and ultimately impact students' educational performance.

Join the Abilene Public Library in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and the cultural celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The display will feature items used for a celebration, and an explanation of each article including flowers, candles, salt, ashes, bread, water, incense, fruit, favorite items belonging to the person being honored and pictures. Carmen Lathem will be here from 6:00 - 7:30 PM to answer questions about this celebration.

At Texas Star Trading Co., see A Little Piece of Texas, a display and sale of small, original framed paintings by Charlie Hukill.

Melissa Ragan, of MR Art, will be at the Honeycomb Tree at 7:00 PM presenting new paintings and wood sculptures. As always, the Honeycomb Tree will be open for shopping until 8:00 PM.

At the Grace Museum, create your own chalk pastel masterpiece to celebrate ChalkWalk in Make It and Take It, a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all ages available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.

GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS

The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress St.

Jane Adams Breed Gallery: Symbolic Renditions by Ford Farr
Ford Farr's expressive painting style depicts unusual subjects and incorporates satirical allusions to well-known artworks.

Gallery 2: Green a Center Artist Member Group Exhibit - This photography exhibit by Center Artist members explores the different interpretations of the word "Green." Our environment is in a fragile state and this new, innovative term seems to be the all-encompassing path to turning things around.

Gallery 3: Go Figure-ative a Center Artist Member Group Exhibit - The figure is one of the most complicated subjects to capture. Whether it's a hand or a full body in movement, an artist's interpretation of the figure can often be a direct insight into an artist's ability and skill. This exhibit, Go Figure-ative, allows our artists to present their various talents in expression and encompasses their wit and creativity.

Gallery 4: Nature, Up Close and Personal by Mike Lanier - Lanier's life-like paintings give us a magnified look at animals in nature. Each of these paintings is a close study of the wonderful occurrences in nature

The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress St.

Main Gallery: Closed in preparation for Fall Benefit
Second Floor: Gallery A - Sandria Hu: Smoke and Ash. Sandria Hu's abstract prints, paintings and constructions are both physically and emotionally compelling. Her personalized style and technique has developed over many years of artistic work and worldwide travel. Her work has been called landscapes of the mind - fragments of memory of places visited and revisited again and again.
Galleries B and C - Imaging Blackness, 1915-2002: Film Posters from the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive. Imaging Blackness includes 43 striking posters from almost a century of independent black cinema. Collectively, these film posters provide a captivating exploration of the development of African-American cinema as it forged a role for black entertainers that countered - or reinforced - prevailing racial stereotypes.
