The Dog Days of Summer -
August 14, 2008 ACTIVITIES
AND ENTERTAINMENT Join in the dog parade that
begins at 6:30 PM in front of O'Kelley's Office Supply. Line up by 6:15 to parade
up Cypress Street to Everman Park, where prizes will be awarded for Best Costume,
Best Trick and Most Unusual. In Everman Park, have
a picture taken with your pooch at the Center's photo booth for $2, enjoy live
music by Jennifer Fuentes, get your face painted, and visit with Wendy
Logan from Lads & Lassies and Stephanie Degesero of PETS.
Receptions
will be held for the West Texas Photographic Society and Dirty Draw-ers
exhibits beginning at 6:30 PM at the Center for Contemporary Arts.
Have
your pet's portrait drawn by Center Artist Member Patty Rae Wellborn for
$10, in front of the Center for Contemporary Arts.
A
meeting of the Abilene Swing Dance Society (ASDS) will be held from 8:00
- 11:00 PM in the Windsor Hotel Ballroom (401 Pine Street). There will be a beginner's
dance lesson for the first hour. The price is $5 at the door.
Local
musical group Catclaw Creek will perform at 6:30 PM in front of Texas
Star Trading Co.
Cockerell Galleries invites
you to stop by and become a work of art yourselves! Henna Artist Diana Burk welcomes
everyone to pick from her many designs so she can paint on each of you! Professional
Calligraphers, Suzanne Starr & Anita Lane will be painting name signs for
all of their loyal customers, Shellye Evans & Karen Henicke of Magpie &
Myna: 2 Birds, 1 Stone will be selling BLING for dogs! They will have collars
and jewelry for dogs, and cowgirl bling for humans! Bonni Littleton will help
you and your dog create Paw Print Postcards.
See the
winners of the Abilene Public Library's July art contest featuring Japanese
animation and graphic novel characters. Or perhaps you'd like to see our own original
mural by Debra Warr showing the wonders of children's literature.
At
the Grace Museum, create a Love Puppy to celebrate "Dog Days of Summer"
in Make It and Take It, a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all ages, available
from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.
Eternal Threads and the Sanctuary
Home for Children will have a table set up in Minter Park to display and sell
some of their wonderful new raffia items from Madagascar, and Henna artist Amanda
Petit will provide body art for a small fee.

Shop.
The HSU Chamber Ensemble will be
playing at The Leaf.
The Historic Paramount Theatre
will be closed for August ArtWalk.

Gallery 2: Green
a Center Artist Member Group Exhibit - This photography exhibit by Center Artist
members explores the different interpretations of the word "Green."
Our environment is in a fragile state and this new, innovative term seems to be
the all-encompassing path to turning things around. Gallery
3: West Texas Photographic Society Exhibit and Sale - The West Texas Photographic
Society is a group of photographers ranging from hobbyist to professional who
meet at the Center each month to share tips, tricks, and critiques to improve
their craft. See landscapes, portraits, art and travel photography in this annual
exhibit. *Therewillbeareceptionat6:30 PM.* Gallery
4: Dirty Draw-ers Annual Exhibit - This exhibit features recent figure
drawings and portraits created by the Dirty Draw-ers during their weekly drawing
sessions held at the Center. Conference
Room: Acholi Crossroads by Michael Friberg - The purpose of this
exhibit is to raise funds and awareness for a remarkable story in Northern Uganda
being documented by artist Michael Friberg. All proceeds from the show go toward
the completion of the documentary film Friberg is making and the resettlement
of the Acholi Tribe, who have endured over 20 years of war and human rights violations.
This exhibit is on display in the Conference Room at the Center for Contemporary
Arts. The
Grace Museum 102 Cypress St. Main Gallery: Zero to 60: Art of the
Automobile. The Automotive Fine Arts Society is composed of a small group
of painters and sculptors of automotive fine art who are automotive enthusiasts
and who portray various aspects of the automobile in their fine art. AFAS was
established in 1982 by six individuals who aspired to organize the world's most
prolific group of automotive fine artists. AFAS currently has 30 members living
around the globe who are dedicated to making automotive fine art a genre that
appeals to the wide range of fine art connoisseurs. Second
Floor: Gallery A and B - Nosotras: Portraits of Latinas. Nosotras
features 50 photographs, both black-and-white and color, from eight emerging photographers
documenting the lives and culture of Latinas, most first- or second-generation
immigrants to the United States. These striking images convey dignity and strength
in the faces, families, and traditions of multiple generations.

C - Into the Woods: Paintings by Lilian Garcia-Roig. Garcia-Roig
is known for lush landscape paintings that create the illusion of recognizable
dense forest settings that dissolve in to a colorful network of thick gestural
paint. Painting directly from life in the Texas Hill Country, the Washington foothills,
or a Florida ravine, Garcia-Roig creates landscape portraits of a specific place
recording her experience.
Come
Play and Learn in The Grace's Children's Museum, featuring many new exhibits that
are certain to educate and entertain!
