at The Center 6:30 for all 4 galleriess. Gallery 1: In Eric Villarreal's new
solo exhibition, titled Guns n' Rosas, he explores familiar themes with
a loose and more painterly approach to the canvas. The subjects he has chosen
for this show range from fifty-cent water guns he purchased at garage sales to
dummy hand grenades to toy guns he received from his children and his friends.
He would like the viewer to see these subjects, not only as a child's toy, but
to what they speak of our American culture. Also, what they mean to various ethnicities
and socio-economic groups. "How is a toy pistol viewed by an inner-city,
single-parent kid as opposed to a nuclear-family, suburban kid?" The other
theme that Mr. Villarreal included in this exhibition is the Chicano woman as
a subject of beauty and power. Eric considers these paintings as paying homage
to the women that have shaped him, the lives of his friends and family. He considers
himself a "people watcher" and is fascinated by the people that come
into his life if only for just a second. "I would like the observer to catch
a glimpse of what I feel when I approach the canvas, to peer in to the soul of
the subject and to be vulnerable to it as well, therefore, creating a connection
with the piece." These new-colorful pieces are a testament to Eric's ever-evolving
approach to his subjects. He has purposefully simplified the design element of
his new paintings as to not detract from what the viewer takes in. This new technique
tries to bridge sound drawing with spontaneity and hopes the viewer will appreciate
his new personal vision and love of the human form. A reception for this exhibit
will be held during ArtWalk on Thursday July 8th at 6:30pm. This exhibit will
be on display through August 28th. Gallery
2: Photo Jessica Cunningham: Ranch Stories "What makes photography
so great is that I get to stop a moment in time that I think is special and share
it with you. The bulk of my photographs are centered around the day to day of
our ranching operation, though I enjoy many subjects. I don't know the exact moment
I fell in love with photography, but for the last few years it has grown from
a hobby to a passion. My equipment consists of two cameras, a Canon 5D and Canon
20D digital SLR, my computer and digital software, and several lenses. I raise
meat goats with my husband, do book keeping and work on the family ranch, where
I find many of my best subjects. My love of fine art photography has led me to
begin doing some portrait photography. I will be opening up a studio and art store
in Cross Plains within the next year." Gallery
3: Three Score and Nearly Ten "Three Score and Nearly Ten is an exhibition
by two retired high school art teachers and Center artist members that are three
score and nearly ten years old. We have taught together & been friends for awhile.
