Military Salute - July 10, 2008

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT

Enjoy a performance by the Abilene Community Band in Everman park at 6:30 PM.

Stop by the Center for Contemporary Arts to hear the HSU chamber string ensemble, to see the new exhibit, El Amor es Peligroso by Anthony and Mary K. Kiel Huff, and to see the Acholi Crossroads photography exhibit by Michael Friberg on the second floor.

Americans have been fascinated by the tropical islands of the Philippines for more than a hundred years, and you'll be fascinated by Shirley Bryant's collection of warm water Philippine sea shells on display this month at the Abilene Public Library. While you're in, take a peek at the library's mural devoted to all the wonders that spring from the imagination and the pages of children's literature.

The NCCIL is joining forces with Hendrick Health System, the Abilene Right Weigh Project and the Community Foundation of Abilene to present UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU TO BE HEALTHY! Join us at the NCCIL for a fun and educational evening highlighting the benefits of healthy living. Bring your family, young and old, and enjoy a summer evening filled with activities for "kids" of all ages, including a family scavenger hunt, story time throughout the evening with talking vegetables, art activities in the NCCIL Art Studio and the Right Weigh Get Fit Boot Camp on the parking lot. There will be free giveaways and a chance to win a Nintendo Wii system!

At the Grace Museum, create a patriotic bracelet in Make It and Take It, a free hands-on art activity for kids of all ages. Make It and Take It is available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.

Eternal Threads and the Sanctuary Home for Children will have a table set up in Minter Park to display and sell some of their wonderful new raffia items from Madagascar, and Henna artist Amanda Petit will provide body art for a small fee.

Stop in at Monks Coffee Shop for an iced tuxedo mocha and to see artwork by Lisa Beacleay and Mary Fink.

Cockerell Galleries invites you to participate in Creative Camouflage art projects with Bonni Littleton, to see beautiful calligraphy by Anita Lane and Suzanne Starr and to experience henna body art with artist Diana Burk. For small hands the cost will be $5, and for bigger hands, $10!

The Abilene Swing Dance Society (ASDS) will be held from 8:00 - 11:00 PM in the Windsor Hotel Ballroom (401 Pine Street). There will be a dance lesson for the first hour. The price is $5.

Gallery 2: The Mortal Part by Philip Van Keuren - Philip Van Keuren is an Art Professor at SMU who exhibits photograph diptychs featuring complementary images of nature and architecture.


Gallery 3: Pie R Square - Center Artist Member Group Exhibit - The Center's Artist Members are at it again! Come see their witty interpretation of the formula pir2.


Gallery 4: The Secrets of Nature by Larry Millar - This installation by Larry Millar reveals the hidden potential of natural materials.

Main Gallery: Zero to 60: Art of the Automobile. The Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) is composed of a small group of painters and sculptors who are automotive enthusiasts and portray various aspects of the automobile in their fine art. AFAS was established in 1982 by six individuals who aspired to organize the world's most prolific group of automotive fine artists. AFAS currently has 30 members living around the globe who are dedicated to making automotive fine art a genre that appeals to a wide range of fine art connoisseurs.


Second Floor: Galleries A and B - Nosotras: Portraits of Latinas

Nosotras features 50 photographs, both black-and-white and color, from eight emerging photographers documenting the lives and culture of Latinas. These striking images convey dignity and strength in the faces, families, and traditions of multiple generations.


Second Floor: Gallery C - Lilian Garcia-Roig: Into the Woods. Garcia-Roig is known for lush landscape paintings that create the illusion of recognizable dense forest settings that dissolve in to a colorful network of thick gestural paint. Painting directly from life in the Texas Hill Country, the Washington foothills, or a Florida ravine, Garcia-Roig creates landscape portraits of a specific place recording her experience.


Come Play and Learn in The Grace's Children's Museum, featuring many new exhibits that are certain to educate and entertain!

Cockerell Galleries "Upstairs" proudly presents July's featured artist, T.M. Gand. Her show in #207 will display an array of vividly-colored, textured paintings! NEW to Cockerell Galleries is guest artist Natasha Hart with the never before displayed exhibit A Prompting Heart: A Series of Self Portraits. Enjoy a visit with Ash Almonte in her "painted" studio; enjoy the larger-than-life pieces by Brittany Bennett and Stacy Horton of Studio Brista, #210. Take in the beauty of Nancy Capra's oils, and pieces by her daughter, Hannah Capra in their new studio, #213. Stacey Henrion will be selling handmade jewelry. In Everman Park, the Abilene Community Band will be performing. Keep Abilene Beautiful will have brochures on Xeriscaping and info on Friends of Keep Abilene Beautiful available in front of Cockerell Galleries.
