AND MUSEUMS The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220
Cypress Street Jane Adams Breed Gallery: Deep Roots:
Brandon Phillips & Kent Harris During the
months of May and June, the Jane Adams Breed Gallery will be presenting Deep
Roots, a functional ceramics exhibit by Signature Artist Member Brandon
Phillips and Amarillo artist, Kent Harris. This exhibit will be the first exhibit
entirely comprised of ceramic works ever displayed at the Center, which shows
true growth in the Centers membership and mission. Phillips and Harris will
display works by themselves and works by the potters who have influenced them
the most and are therefore bringing pottery from artists as far away as Minnesota
and Wisconsin to this exhibit. Both Phillips and Harris are strongly influenced
by the Folk Craft movement, started in the early 1900s by Japanese philosopher,
Setsu Yanagi. Other potters works exhibited
in this show also take inspiration from the movement in some way, presenting a
cohesive display of functional ceramics. Other artists represented in this exhibit
are: Linda Christianson, Megan Easley, Willem Gebben, Randy Johnston and Jan McKeachie
Johnston, Warren Mackenzie, Jeff Oestreich, Scott Roberts, and Elmer Taylor. The
exhibit will be on display from May 8th through June 27th and an opening reception
will be held May 8th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Gallery 2
(Photography): The White Board Project: Michael Itkoff The
Center is proud to present works by Michael Itkoff, photographer, and Founding
Editor of Daylight Magazine. The White Board Project features images of ordinary
people in urban settings photographed in front of a white board taken
from a photography studio or gallery. The pieces present a sort of social commentary
explained in Itkoffs statement below: The Street Portraits project
originated from a desire to subvert the hierarchy created by celebrity photography
and advertising. It consists of portraits taken in five cities around the world
since 2002: London, Sydney, Hanoi, Bangkok, and New York. Billions are spent every
year in order to show us the same faces and products in clean, controlled studio
settings. In response, I wanted to take a piece of the studio or gallery wall
and place it behind ordinary people in the street. While photographing in disparate
urban settings the white board becomes an equalizer, a negative space that unites
the subjects while separating them from their individual contexts. Michael
Itkoff This exhibit will be on display through May 30th. Gallery
3: National Arts Program - annual exhibit The
National Arts Program in Abilene displays the talent of residents of the city
of Abilene. The National Arts Program exists to provide a venue of expression
for city employees and their families. The exhibit is open for entries from any
resident, employee, or relative of Abilene citizens. The exhibit is judged by
a local arts professional for awards and offers cash prizes to the winners. The
goal of this program is to allow people who dont usually have the time or
venue to participate in arts events with an opportunity for exposure to the art
community. There will be an awards presentation and reception at 6:30 PM on May
14th during ArtWalk. Gallery 4: Dont Let Me
Down David Lindsay The Center for Contemporary
Arts is proud to present Don't Let Me Down, works by Texas Tech Professor of Art,
David Lindsay. Lindsay describes his work as focused on the interaction
between images of the human form and the structured, three-dimensional surfaces
upon which the figures are depicted. This exhibit will be on display from
May 8th through June 26th. An opening reception will be held May 8th from 6:30
to 8:30 pm. For more information on David and his work, visit: www.wooloo.org/davidart

artist between 2005 and 2008. The Grace Museum has also published a large hardcover
book in tandem with the exhibition, entitled James Surls: From the Heartland,

of the nations foremost authorities on contemporary art. Books are available
to purchase at The Grace Museum beginning May 2. Gallery
AHelen Altman: Spotted Deer | Helen Altman selects commonplace
materials such as packing blankets, wire, and paper and transforms them into arresting
images by employing unexpected and demanding techniques and tools. Each domesticated
and wild animal depicted appears alone and separated from their natural habitat.
By focusing her imagery on the delicate balance of nature, the artist invites
us to consider reality and our understanding of what is natural, and how we experience
nature in contemporary culture. Galleries B & CTime
Mediated Anomalies: High Desert Paintings of James Woodson | From
a distance, Fort Worth artist Jim Woodsons paintings appear to be familiar
landscapes. But upon careful inspection, the large-scale, richly colored canvases
reveal subtle distortions and ethereal references. The oil paintings are inspired
by sweeping southwestern panoramas of Texas and New Mexico. Actively reinterpreting
rather than merely depicting what he sees, the artists process involves
photographing and then recombining elements from different perspectives to create
a more personalized version of the scene. NCCIL (National
Center for Childrens Illustrated Literature), 102 Cedar Street Will
be closed during ArtWalk. They are in the process of preparing for their next
exhibition featuring Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart: The Wizards of Pop. Visit
their website for the opening events starting May 28th at www.nccil.org. 12th
