Enjoy ArtWalk Thursday, May 8th from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. ArtWalk is sponsored this month by CBS Insurance.

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Texas Tornadoes will perform on the star at the intersection of N. 1st and Cypress at 6:00 PM, just before the Western Heritage Parade begins at 6:30 PM. After the parade, there will be a street dance from 7:30 - 9:30 PM.

The Vivace Classical Chorus will perform at 6:00 PM inside the Center for Contemporary Arts.

There will be a reception and awards presentation for the National Arts Program exhibit, on the second floor of the Center for Contemporary Arts at 6:30 PM.

The second Meeting of the Abilene Swing Dance Society (ASDS) will be held from 8:00 - 11:00 PM in the Windsor Hotel Ballroom (401 Pine Street). There will be a beginner’s dance lesson for the first hour. The price is $5 at the door.

ACU*Cockerell Art Gallery is bringing excitement to downtown ArtWalk! The Beat Goes On: Art of the Boomer Generation high school art competition will open with a reception beginning ArtWalk night, at 5:00 PM. Abilene High School drama and music students will present songs and skits, and cash awards will be announced at 7:00 PM.

The Abilene High School Theatre Department improv team will be performing at the Historic Paramount Theatre.

The “Magic Lamp” dance students, led by instructor Jami Chance, will be performing Arabic dances in front of Cockerell Galleries. Enjoy the music and repeat performances throughout the evening. LIVE comedy skits, acted and directed by Abilene Acting Workshop’s Director, Caleb Green, will also occur throughout the evening.

Stop in at Monks Coffee Shop for an iced tuxedo mocha and to see artwork by Jennifer Fuentes.

Keep Abilene Beautiful will be present with information about Xeriscaping and 2007 Ladybird Johnson Christmas ornaments.

Texas Star Trading Company will hold a book signing featuring Ellen Webb of Abilene, author of the down-home cookbook, “You’ll Be Going Back for Seconds,” beginning at 5:30 PM.

Eternal Threads (101 Walnut) invites you to visit their new offices and display area to learn about their latest projects and fair trade product lines. They will be hosting a “Fair Trade Coffee Break” to celebrate the Fair Trade Fortnight, May 3-18, 2008. Come and have a free cup from Peace Coffee.

Create a boot collage at the Grace Museum to celebrate “Preserving Heritage” in Make It and Take It. Make It and Take It is a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all ages, available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.

Roundabout Coffeehouse (421 Pine) invites you to their grand opening! Work by artist and photographer Byron Vaughan will be on display and the Lauren Bush quartet will be performing from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

EXHIBITS

The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress St.

Jane Adams Breed Gallery: Mad Syndrome by Adam Luther. Adam Luther’s artistic style engages viewers and inspires them to find the message conveyed through his narrative-like painting.

Gallery 2: ABILENE TXtures by Burgess Thomas - Burgess Thomas is a local photographer who captures interesting compositions in unexpected places. Her work inspires viewers to stop and notice that which is often overlooked.

Gallery 3: National Arts Program Exhibit - The 18th Annual National Arts Program exhibit displays the talent of residents of the city of Abilene. The National Arts Program exists to provide a venue of expression for city employees and their families. *There will be a reception and an awards presentation at 6:30 PM.*

Gallery 4: New Work by Kaleta Doolin - Kaleta Doolin is an artist out of Dallas, Texas who brings us her fanciful creations through a variety of unconventional media including video and light box installations.

ACU*Cockerell Gallery: The Beat Goes On: Art of the Boomer Generation - High School art competition.

Cockerell Galleries “upstairs” proudly presents its featured artist for May: potter Heather Turner of FILOS. New designs by Ash Almonte will be on exhibit and Brittany Bennett & Stacy Horton of Studio Brista are thrilled to open their first studio showroom. Come see Nancy and Hannah Capra and Carey’s newly decorated and renovated studio and don’t miss the newly remodeled studio of Joanna Fortson of “The Wild Paintbrush.” TM Gand welcomes the public to see her vividly-colored works; and you will want to see photographer Doug Hodel’s one-of-a-kind images. Enjoy Samantha Manski’s beautiful world of photography. Photographer Tammy Marcelain welcomes all to share in the joy of her newly designed and recently opened studio. Come be amazed at the newest creations of Jessica Natalee Templeton. Need help fast? Come visit C. Kahl, Clinical Hypnotherapist, in her relaxing and soothing studio. Main Gallery: Closed for new exhibit preparation

Second Floor: Gallery A - Katrina: The Color of Loss, Photography by Dan Burkholder. This exhibit by Dan Burkholder brings something unique and haunting to our experience of the impact Hurricane Katrina had on the lives of those involved. Katrina: The Color of Loss is a series of photographs focusing on the remnants of homes and public spaces minus the former inhabitants.

Second Floor: Galleries B and C - Made in America: Artwork of Jaune Quick-To-See Smith. This exhibit includes more than 30 pieces by Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, who is known around the world as an artist, curator, lecturer, activist and spokesperson on behalf of contemporary American Indian art.

Come Play and Learn in The Grace’s Children’s Museum, featuring many new exhibits that are certain to educate and entertain!

Third Floor: History Museum

Mallouf Boot Shop and Historic Period Rooms

12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, 1289 N. 2nd St.

Living History Interpreters will be dressed in 12th Armored Division WWII uniforms, and talking about WWII weapons. Free small gifts to children inside the gift shop.

NCCIL (National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature), 102 Cedar St.

The Way We Work by David Macaulay - This exhibit will be open through July 26, 2008.

Frontier Texas!, 625 N. 1st St.

Frontier Texas! will be open from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Receive $1 off admission all day when you ask for the ArtWalk discount.

SPECIALTY SHOPS

Cassandra’s and Company, 173 Pine St. Open until 7:00 PM during ArtWalk.

The Leaf, 202 Cypress St. The Leaf features an espresso bar with hot and iced espresso beverages, including Italian sodas, iced tea, and sodas; tobacco, cigars, and pipes, teas and gifts.

The Honeycomb Tree, 1166 N. 2nd St. The Honeycomb Tree will feature paintings by Glen R. McKelvy, a local artist born in Albany in 1937. Mr. McKelvy earned acclaim in various shows, and his work is recognized in Arkansas as well as Texas. One of his paintings now hangs in the Museum of Arkansas.

Texas Star Trading Company, 174 Cypress St. will be open until 8:00 PM for shopping. Be sure to drop by!

The Beehive, 442 Cedar St. Enjoy live music, free hors d’oeuvres and a happy hour drink special from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Cypress Street Station, 158 Cypress St. Art by Stan McCracken will be on display this month.

Monks Coffee Shop, 233 Cypress St. Stop in to enjoy a great cup of coffee and enjoy art by Jennifer Fuentes. Open until Midnight, Thursday-Saturday.

McKay’s Bakery, 226 Cypress St. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a tasty treat, or stop by for a sandwich and soup.

The Warehouse in the T&P, N. 1st & Pine St. Continue the fun into the night with live music & drink specials. Open 5:00 - 7:00 PM for Happy Hour. Open until midnight. 21 & up.

The Civic Plaza Hotel, 505 Pine St. The lobby and restaurant will be open from 5:00 - 9:00 PM.

PARK AND STREET VENDORS
Dream On! will offer free dream interpretations in front of Busch Jewelers. Please visit their website at www.destinydreamz.com. Marianna Morrison will be selling a variety of handmade goods in front of the Center. Stacey Henrion will be selling handmade jewelry, and Loving Threads will be selling handmade Mother’s Day gifts. Jenna Jones will be giving free five minute massage demos in Minter Park.
