AND MUSEUMS The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220
Cypress Street Jane Adams Breed Gallery: The Ivory-Billed
Woodpecker Art Auction invitational exhibit hosted by Larry Millar
Signature Artist Member Larry Millar is well known for
his love of nature. Much of his work is derived from natural materials-- sediments
in mud, wood, leaves etc. and allows viewers to be fascinated with the elements.
This exhibit, hosted by Millar, is an invitational to various other artists to
express their interests in one very exclusive part of nature: The Ivory-billed
Woodpecker. Last sighted in 2004, this rare bird has become a high priority for
conservation in the Big Woods of Arkansas. Each piece displayed in this exhibit
is also displayed in an online auction at biddingforgood.com. Proceeds from this
exhibit will go to the Big Woods Conservancy in hopes of preserving this bird's
natural habitat. Gallery 2 (Photography): Michael
Itkoff: The White Board Project The Center
is proud to present works by Michael Itkoff, photographer, Founding Editor of
Daylight Magazine. The Street Portraits project originated from a desire
to subvert the hierarchy created by celebrity photography and advertising. It
consists of portraits taken in five cities around the world since 2002: London,
Sydney, Hanoi, Bangkok, and New York. Billions are spent every year in order to
show us the same faces and products in clean, controlled studio settings. In response,
I wanted to take a piece of the studio or gallery wall and place it behind ordinary
people in the street. While photographing in disparate urban settings the white
board becomes an equalizer, a negative space that unites the subjects while separating
them from their individual contexts. Michael Itkoff Gallery
3: Creative Arts Club- annual exhibit The Creative
Arts Club, formed in 1933, has been a practicing group in Abilene for 76 years.
It is comprised of various artists from surrounding areas, ranging from hobbyists
to professionals, all with a passion for art. The Group meets once a month at
the Center for Contemporary Arts and hosts various workshops from master painters
throughout the year. The exhibit will be judged by professional artist Kay Smith
and awards will be given at an opening reception held during ArtWalk April 9th,
at 6:30 pm. This exhibit will be on display from April
4th April 25th. Gallery 4: PHOBOS-
Lisa Beacleay Student Artist Member Lisa Beacleay, in
conjunction with the annual TASA (Texas Association of Schools of Art) convention,
will be presenting PHOBOS, an exhibit about her greatest fears in Gallery 4 during
the months of March and April. Beacleay recently won Best in Show in the Center's
Inaugural Intercollegiate Student Art Competition for her mixed media painting,
"Carcomorphobia" and is finishing her BFA in 2010 at Hardin Simmons
University. The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress Street In
The Grace Museums Main Gallery, visitors can browse the 20 To Watch:
New Art in Austin exhibit. This unique showcase introduces 20 emerging
artists from Central Texas whose work represents the cutting-edge of art production.
The main gallery will showcase new adaptations of traditional media as well as
the latest in installation, video and assemblage by 20 of the states hottest
new art stars. The third in a triennial series organized by the Austin Museum
of Art, 20 to Watch: New Art in Austin gives these young artists, all of whom
are under thirty, a premier exhibition and introduces their work to a larger audience.
A statewide curatorial team evaluated the work of hundreds of artists. The 20
selected were evaluated by AMOA staff and Central Texas art professionals over
three years. On the museum's second floor, Abilene Education
Foundation (AEF) is pleased to present the premier show for the AEF Young Masters
Juried Art Exhibition for Advanced Placement art students. In collaboration
with The Grace Museum and the Abilene Independent School District, the goals of
the exhibition are to celebrate young master artists and their dedicated teachers
for demonstrating excellence in artistic expression and education, and to recognize
outstanding artistic expression with a quality museum exhibition. 12th
