I Heart Art ArtWalk - February 12 , 2009

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT
At the Center for Contemporary Arts, see a sculpting demonstration by Pamela Gilbreth Watkins and enjoy a reception for the very special student photography contest, Caring Couples hosted by the Texas Family Institute and the Twogether In Texas Program. The Heart Gallery will also be on display on the second level of the Center, in the conference room.

For those who are "Wild at Heart," stop in at The Grace Museum and take part in Make and Take It, a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all ages from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

The work of children's book illustrator Ashley Bryan will be on display in Abilene at the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL). Rhythms of the Heart: The Illustration of Ashley Bryan opens on February 12th and will be displayed at the NCCIL gallery until May 1, 2009. Ashley Bryan will be in Abilene to participate in the opening events. The events will begin with the Alliance After Care Putu Mayo Choir signing in the Gallery at 6:30. The Community Gallery Talk will start at 6:45 followed by a Book Signing with the illustrator. Ashley Bryan is an artist, a writer, an anthologist, a storyteller, and a noted scholar of African and African American folklore. He hopes that his work with African tales will be like a "tender bridge" connecting past to present, reaching across distances of time and space. Ashley Bryan's numerous awards and honors include the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration, six Coretta Scott King Honors, the Arbuthnot Prize, one of the highest honors in children's literature, and a Fulbright Scholarship. His poetry and paintings have, and continue to influence a whole generation of children.

The Abilene Public Library's ArtWalk display will be in honor of Black History Month.

Stop into Monks Coffee Shop to see artwork by T.M. Gand and pottery by Austin and Elizabeth Brown. There will also be an opportunity to learn about the Abilene Empty Bowls Project, taking place on February 21, 2009.

See the special Artistic Expressions in the storefront windows at 240 Cypress, organized by the Cancer Services Network.

At the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum Living History Interpreters Tom Walke, Alex Philips, and Bill Lenches will give 15 minute presentations of the 12th Armored Division in WWII's uniforms and firearms.
