Enjoy ArtWalk Thursday, January 10th
from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. ArtWalk is sponsored this month by Minuteman
Press.
ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT
Animal Ambassadors from the Abilene Zoo will
be at the NCCIL from 6:00-7:00 PM with a variety of animals
for kids to experience. Kids can create their own stylized animal
drawing.
At the Grace Museum, Create a Winter Wonderland Art Piece
for "Celebrate 2008" in Make It and Take It. Make it
and Take it is a free, hands-on art activity for kids of all ages.
It will be available from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.
Stop by the Center for Contemporary Arts
to see three new exhibits - Close at Hand by Charlie Hukill, Mike
Massey and Tony Berry in the Breed Gallery, Murray and Clevenger,
Together Again by Linda Murray and Sarabeth Clevenger in Gallery
3, and Sunburn by Chris McCaw in Gallery 4.
Stop by the Abilene Public Library to
visit with local photographer Zach Griffith, whose landscape photography
will be on display. He will be on hand to talk about his creative
process.
Continuing in the ACU*Cockerell Art Gallery
is Double-Vision: Dream Ladder Series, by Jack & Jill Maxwell.
This exhibit displays biblical prints, digital images and sculptures.
Henry Morgan of Ranger, Texas, will be sharing his passion for
pinhole photography outside of the Cockerell Gallery. He will
have an array of his homemade cameras, along with his one-of-a-kind
photography taken from his fascinating cameras.
GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
The Center for Contemporary Arts, 220
Cypress St.
Jane Adams Breed Gallery: Close at Hand, by
Charlie Hukill, Mike Massey and Tony Berry. This collection of
work features a compelling style of portraiture, on-site watercolor
painting, and sensual, textured ceramics. This show offers a glimpse
into the personal and emotional experience of friendship and family.
Gallery 2: TPS 16: The National Competition
Selections from the Texas Photographic Society's National Competition
will be on display. This exhibit features work from photographers
across the nation, and will travel to Houston, New York City,
and San Francisco.
Gallery 3: Murray and Clevenger, Together Again
by Linda Murray and Sarabeth Clevenger. This dynamic exhibit focuses
on the environment and the self-conscious. An energetic grace
exhibited in each of the pieces prompts the viewer to receive
a poignant message. This show exhibits the contrast between control
and release.
Gallery 4: Sunburn by Chris McCaw. Chris McCaw's
one-of-a-kind images are created using an alternative process
in which he uses long exposures to solarize the photo paper in
his hand-made large format cameras. Most of the prints are literally
"sunburned" as the camera tracks the path of the sun
during exposure.
Cockerell's 2nd Street Gallery and Studios,
1133 N. 2nd St.
Cockerell Galleries is proud to feature artist,
TM Gand with her colorful multimedia presentations, all displayed
on the 2nd floor of the Cockerell Building. Alaskan photography
will also be on display by Doug Hodel, and Filos' artists also
invite you to browse their studio full of beautiful pottery, photography,
and paintings. Come visit with artist, Ash Almonte, and see art
through the eyes of our youngest artist, Hannah Capra. Nancy Capra's
inspirational pieces are a must-see, as well. Don't miss the amazing
world of photography by artist, Sammi Manski's, as well as the
colorful and inspiring pieces by Jessica Natalee Templeton. Clinical
Hypnotherapist, C. Kahl, invites everyone in for an enjoyable
visit in her studio's serene surroundings. Special guest artist
will be Meghan Foster.
Frontier Texas!, 625 N. 1st St.
See the Toy Stories exhibit in the Frontier
Gallery. This exhibit allows visitors to celebrate the season
with antique toys. Local collectors supplied more than 80 toys,
from the 1890s to the 1950s. Frontier Texas! will be open from
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Main Gallery: Closed until February 7 for exhibit

Second Floor: Galleries A, B and C: Alzheimer's:
Forgetting Piece by Piece: An Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.
This exhibit contains 52 quilts each interpreting Alzheimer's
in some way. The AAQI is a grassroots effort to raise awareness
and fund research to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease.
Children's Museum: Come Play and Learn in The
Grace's Children's Museum, featuring many new exhibits that are
certain to educate and entertain!
Third Floor: History Museum - Mallouf Boot
Shop and Historic Period Rooms
12th Armored Division Memorial Museum,
1289 N. 2nd St.
Living History Interpreters will be dressed
in 12th Armored Division WWII uniforms, and talking about WWII
weapons. Free small gifts to children inside the gift shop.
NCCIL (National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature),
102 Cedar St.
Myth and Magic: The Art of Gerald McDermott
opens January 10th at the National Center for Children's Illustrated
Literature. McDermott's color magic, stylized figures and abstract
motifs combine ancient imagery with contemporary design. Dream
weaver, tale spinner, portrayer of visions, interpreter of the
human spirit, Gerald McDermott is all of these and more.
Abilene Public Library, 202 Cedar St.
You won't be thinking of the bleak midwinter when you stop in
to see local photographer Zach Griffith's landscapes. He'll be
on hand to talk about his creative process. And as you stroll
downtown during ArtWalk, you'll also want to stop in and see Debra
Warr's fabulous mural devoted to all the wonders that spring from
the imagination and the pages of children's literature.
